An amazing book to read for clinicians who struggle with patients with sciatica. Congrats Tom!
The booklet is easy to understand and implement on patients. It provides excellent examples of how to explain nerve pain in a clear and simplified manner.
Summarises the what, why and how of a comprehensive neuro assessment. Fun, interesting and easy to read.
I am a massive fan of Tom’s work and a regular follower of his blogs, Tom is an excellent writer, he has this amazing ability to explain complex information in simple and plain language. I am also aware of Rob’s expertise , so it was an easy decision to purchase their book and I wasn’t disappointed.
This is a very informative, easily digestible yet scientific and correct book. It covers the most important anatomy, physiology and clinical considerations of sciatica. Highly recommended!
Tom has a way of explaining complex concepts in an easy to understand and interesting way. This is a fantastic resource for new and experienced therapists alike
Incredibly helpful, simply written, and thorough. So grateful Tom has made understanding all of this so much easier.
Short, funny and with numerous illustrations, this zine is a little helper for everyday clinical life that you can quickly refer to!

If you are a clinician dealing with sciatica, this book is a must read! Very understandable and with numerous illustrations, this book is the "bible" when it comes to sciatica! At times the book reminded me of the work of Louis Gifford! After reading it, no questions remain unanswered and you can deal with the subject more confidently!
Dear Tom,
When I first experienced sciatica, like so many, I was led to believe it would resolve within 4-6 weeks. I followed the traditional route – MRI, physical therapy, medication, epidural – but after seven months, the pain persisted.
I began researching extensively and discovered your work. While the scientific terminology was challenging at times, I gained a crucial understanding of my condition. Your research empowered me to accept the complexity of my issue and manage it effectively.
Information is truly powerful. Your insights provided a safe space for me to navigate my recovery. After a year and a half, primarily through walking and patience, I am 98% pain-free and fully mobile.
I'm not only grateful for my recovery but also fascinated by the subject. I deeply appreciate your curiosity and dedication to researching and educating others about this misunderstood affliction.
Sincerely,
Steve
I can't say that I didn't understand CES before I read this book, but it sure helped clarify things for me. Since then, I have more confidence explaining the importance of this topic to patients, and feel happier with my assessment of potential severity. A great resource for all MSk clinicians!
This was a good read for me as a clinician. It's very clear, and it has helped me to pass my knowledge onto my patients in a less jumbled manner.
Understanding Sciatica is a fantastic book - thoroughly grounded in research and full of accurate and well explained information.
A really valuable clinical resource.
Helpful little zine, that explains a little bit more than what you get at uni, how to write it down and use it.
Very helpful in understanding how sciatica can develop. There’s great explanation about what’s going on physically and neurophysiologically. This book absolutely helps cement what I’ve learned in school and clears a lot of things up! Already recommended to a friend in PT school.
Very helpful for my clinical practice and for educating students. In depth but clear and without jargon.
Tom and Rob do an incredible job in breaking down the topic and giving you some steps towards being more confident in assessing people with signs and symptoms suggestive of CES. Highly recommended.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone treating patients with sciatica. Tom's writing gives you depth and critical analysis on a topic which is something I have been craving for.
You draw funny cartoons and make a publication that draws your attention from across the room.
Toms Zine's are genius.
I want them blown up as wall-art in my clinic.
Yeah yeah yeah..... it's good knowledge-sharing - there's good content. But anyone can spit out good words on a page.
Once you see the previews - you'll purchase this. It's high value. It's entertaining.... oh yeah and it'll make you a better Clinician.
Yes... throw them away.
You're much less likely to miss CES after reading this because Tom hasn't just listed Black & White Criteria. He's outlined the Grey - the Spectrum. The grey spectrum of neurological symptoms that CES can impact.
Other books will give you a false sense of confidence after ticking and flicking a checklist full of false dichotomies.
Armed with the knowledge of this book you can better spot CES. But more importantly, you're much less likely to miss it .
Additionally, you're better prepared to triage and refer without worrying that you'll look like a fool. Tom has a funny way of making you feel in control, giving you so much confidence when you do refer that those you refer to will probably look to you as someone with more expertise in this condition than them.
Great stuff Tom.
They say "you can't managed what you don't know" and trust me.... after reading this I had to confidence to better manage Lumbar (and Cervical Spine) Spine Referred Pain and Dysfunction.
The understanding of Somatic vs Radicular vs Radiculopathy conditions you gain from reading this and his other works I think puts you in the top 20% of healthcare providers managing spinal and radicular conditions.
A must read for any Clinician, young or old.
An excellent resource. Easy to read. Well structured. The section key points are excellent and an easy means to refresh knowledge after a full read through. Highly recommended for any physiotherapist who sees patients with back pain.
